Market day well attended

Traditionally fare continues to hit the spot with Maniototo residents, who spent hundreds of dollars on cheese rolls, sausages and home baking in the name of fundraising recently.

More than $700 was generated for Ranfurly's volunteer radio station Burn 729am through cheese rolls and a sausage sizzle at the Maniototo Markets held on Saturday of the Labour Weekend.

Up against more modern treats such as sushi, the old favourites could not be turned down by hungry market browsers, who braved cold, wet, and windy weather to attend the biannual event.

Organiser Amie Pont said despite bitterly cold wind and periodic rain on Saturday, the market was attended by a record number of people.

"Although we were packed up by midday, stalls still reported a good day and a quarter of them nearly sold out," Mrs Pont said.

Almost 30 stall sites sold out more than one month before the event, with stallholders coming from as far away as Oamaru, Dunedin, Green Island, and Queenstown.

Community groups who took the opportunity to raise funds at the markets included the Ranfurly Playcentre, Blackstone Hill Trust, Maniototo Highland Pipe Band, Maniototo Garden Club and the Maniototo Quilt Group, which raffled a specially-made quilt to raise funds for the Chalet Rest Home in Ranfurly.
