The granting of an on-licence for a proposed Alexandra branch of AmiGos restaurant has been appealed.

The Central Otago District Licensing Committee last month granted an on-licence to Amlex Ltd to open a branch of AmiGos at 3 Deel St, Alexandra, which is currently occupied by McLellans Plumbing and Heating.

The committee granted a "class one restaurant style on-licence" for the sale of alcohol on the premises from 10am to 11pm Sunday to Thursday, 10am to midnight on Friday and Saturday, and in the restaurant's outdoor dining area from 10am to 10pm from Monday to Sunday.

Thompson St resident Kevin Trainor, who lives near the premises, told the Otago Daily Times he had lodged an appeal with the Alcohol Regulatory and Licensing Authority (Arla).

He said "we have no issues at all with AmiGos coming to Alexandra . . . but it's not the best fit for for a quiet residential area".

When approached for comment, an Arla spokesman said they could not confirm if any other objections had also been made.

McLellans building owner Rory McLellan said he was "disappointed'' as a fellow business, rather than a building owner, that residents were taking the matter to a national body, as he had been "working hard" to promote business in Alexandra.

"The inclusion of AmiGos restaurant as our neighbour would be a great addition to the area and reinforce the Alexandra/Clyde basin restaurant network which is so important to make this the great place it is to live, and also to keep people wanting to come here. Our town centre and retailers need all the support we can give them, you only need to look at the Clyde business/residential precinct to see how well business and residential areas can work together to enjoy the great place it is to live and visit."

The appeal will be held in Queenstown some time in the next six months.
