More entries being sought for Arts Gold Awards

Organisers of the Arts Gold Awards are seeking more entries for the Central Otago arts event.

Central Otago District Arts Trust co-ordinator Maxine Williams said only 90 entries had been received yesterday for the national biennial event.

There were 240 entries for the last event.

''People usually leave it to the last minute and artists are notorious for it.''

The awards were open to anyone living in New Zealand over the age of 18, and the trust would accept entries until 5pm tomorrow.

''The idea of the awards was to bring and attract artists to Central Otago and give our artists an opportunity to be part of a national exhibition,'' she said.

Winners of the awards will be announced at the exhibition opening at the Russell Henderson Art Gallery, in the Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery building, on October 16.

Some $10,500 would be awarded - an art excellence award of $5000, the Central Otago artist award of $3000, as well as two merit prizes valued at $1000 each and the viewers' choice award of $500.

Judges for the event are Dunedin Public Art Gallery director Cam McCracken,

Real Art Roadshow director Fiona Campbell and Wellington art curator and writer Brian Wood.

''It's a bit unique in regards to many of the exhibitions around the country, because we allow all disciplines to enter,'' Ms Williams said.

Those included photography, painting, sculptures, and video art.

Tickets for the exhibition opening are $30 and will be for sale online from September 21 or from Central Stories office and local i-Sites.

All finalists will receive one free ticket and may purchase one discounted ticket at $20.
