Sergeant Jill Woods, of Auckland, has accepted the position and will move to Cromwell with her family next month.
She was an inspector in the United Kingdom before moving to Auckland a few years ago, Senior Sergeant Mike Cook, of Alexandra, said.
"Sgt Woods was one of the police officers who came to New Zealand through the UK recruitment programme we have been running for the past few years. She was also a frontline sergeant in Britain," he said.
Sgt Woods will start policing in Cromwell about the same time her husband, also a police sergeant, starts work as a constable at the Queenstown station.
Police from Alexandra and other Central Otago stations have been helping fellow officers at Cromwell while the station has had a vacancy.
Sgt Ereckson retired from his leading role at the Cromwell station in August, after more than 30 years in the police force.
He said it was time for him to move on to another job.
