The future of a proposed dog park in Clyde is still up in the air as council staff prepare to present a report on the park to the Vincent Community Board.

If the park was developed, it would be on council reserve land between Dunstan Hospital and Dunstan Golf Course.

Springvale resident Crystal Currie suggested the idea of a dog park to the council last year and submitted to the 10-year plan.

The council told her the Clyde area was already designated a ''dog exercise area'' but Mrs Currie wanted the council to add seating, rubbish bins, signs and dog agility equipment to the space.

At Tuesday's community board meeting, member Russell Garbutt said a site in Alexandra near the Clutha River and town's boat ramp between Dunorling St and Walnut Grove could be an alternative if the board chose not to develop the dog park in Clyde.

Mrs Currie said she suggested this land option and another one, across the road from Centennial Park in Alexandra by the Manuherikia River.

She understood these areas were ''flood prone'' so could not be built on.

However, Clyde was the top option as it was already designated as a dog exercise area.

Council planning and environment executive manager Louise van der Voort said when the report was presented to the board it would have two options if it wanted to go ahead with the Clyde park - fund it through some kind of board reserves or increase district dog registration fees.

Board member James Armstrong said there would be ''tremendous resistance'' against increasing dog registration fees for the park, especially in the Maniototo.

Ms van der Voort said there had even been at least one inquiry into a dog park in Cromwell.
