One person was taken to hospital with serious injuries after a vehicle crashed into a tree in the Beaumont area overnight.
A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said emergency services were called about 1.20am.
Cutting equipment was needed to free the person from the vehicle.
A rescue helicopter was initially called but was stood down due to bad weather.
St John said the person was taken to Dunedin Hospital by ambulance with serious injuries.
Emergency services had left the scene by 3am.
