Police praise behaviour

Cromwell police were happy with the behaviour of residents during the weekend and have also praised the number of sober drivers around the town this month.

Last week, the head officer at the Cromwell station Sergeant Mike Williams expressed concern about the number of highly intoxicated people seen around Cromwell the previous weekend and warned a hard line would be taken on policing liquor licensing laws.

There was a "vast improvement" during the past weekend and no damage or disorder was reported to police, Sgt Williams said.

Licensees had agreed to work with police to reduce levels of intoxication within the town.

"I hope that the weekend just gone was an example of the benefits this will bring," Sgt Williams said.

During the first two weeks of this month, police stopped 312 vehicles, but made no arrests for drink-driving.

"This is a great result after a poor month in August, where we appeared negatively when compared with other areas in Central Otago," he said.
