A couple of rainy days had the customers flooding in to the Alexandra Rotary Club's charity book sale, resulting in record proceeds of more than $25,000.

The amount was the highest in the event's 23-year history and the figure was reached well before the five-day sale finished yesterday afternoon, sale convener Ken Cook said.

''We hoped we'd achieve the $25,000 and we've gone over that, so we're delighted.''

The final figure raised was not available yesterday but would probably be ''several thousand'' more than $25,000, he said.

Half that amount was taken on the first day of the sale - Boxing Day - but two wet days also boosted the number of customers.

''It was really crowded on those days, Monday and Tuesday.''

Mr Cook said it was a good clean-out of the stock and the customers were holidaymakers and locals.

''It's amazing how many come back with the books [to give to the next year's sale].

Sometimes, they'll return them before the sale is finished, so we can sell them again, or they will donate them back at the following year's sale.''

Roading engineer David Shaw, of Wyndham, who was on holiday in Bannockburn, was one of those stocking up on reading material yesterday.

His 20-book haul included a publication of road traffic research, which he thought would be useful for work, and some lighter reading in the form of a mid-1960s copy of Ian Fleming's Dr No.

''I collect the early paperback editions of the James Bond books, so I'm especially pleased with that, '' he said.

Mr Cook said the event was a good team effort, with volunteers devoting more than 500 hours to the sale.

It is the club's biggest fundraiser for the year and the money is used for a host of community projects.
