Residents of Teviot Valley were getting into the Scottish spirit yesterday.

Children from schools and early childhood centres, residents, and shopkeepers were flashing a bit of tartan to mark the beginning of a three-day Scottish-themed event - Teviot Tartan Time.

Committee member Trudie Marsh said it was ''quite an amazing day''.

She spent the day driving around with committee members, visiting schools and businesses.

The highlight was seeing the entries for the letter box-decorating competition, judged by three local posties, who were ''blown away'' by the entries.

''The effort was amazing.''

Letter boxes were colourful and creative, with castles, tartan fabric, and yellow polka dot Loch Ness Monsters, she said.

However the winning letterbox had a red-haired cheeky Scotsman showing his backside, made by Vanja and Stu Bain, of Millers Flat.

The committee was impressed with children from Roxburgh Area School and Millers Flat School, and early education centres, she said.

The schools had a Scottish-themed mufti day to coincide with the festival, with money going to St John Roxburgh.

Hairdresser Holly Pemberton, of Roxburgh, said she jumped at the opportunity to dress up for the day.

''You don't get many opportunities to dress up in Roxburgh.''

''If there's something happening in the community, I always get into it and try to help promote the event,'' she said.

Central Otago Town Crier Paddy-Ann Pemberton opened the festival at the movie night last night, with a short feature showcasing last year's Teviot Tartan Wearable Arts Awards.
