It was 32°C in Cromwell mid-afternoon yesterday.

Central Otago sweltered as temperatures rose across the region. The hot, dry conditions sent people flocking to the lake to cool off, while volunteer fire brigades sprang into action to respond to callouts.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokeswoman said crews were called to a vegetation fire at Moa Creek about 1.30pm.

Crews from Blackstone and Omakau attended the 50sqm vegetation fire, extinguishing the blaze within 20 minutes, she said.

Nine minutes later, Dunstan and Alexandra crews were called to a small vegetation fire at Galloway.

A callout at Northburn was a false alarm, the spokeswoman said.
