Triathlon for park

The Highlands Motorsport Park in Cromwell might conjure up images of fast cars for many people, but it will soon be host to a different kind of racing.

In October, keen athletes will get the chance to test their speed on the track in the inaugural Highlands Triathlon Sprints - a day of triathlon, duathlon and cycling.

Race organiser Terry Davis said motorsport park open days last year had allowed the public to see how ''awesome'' the place was and the idea to hold a race other than with cars had stemmed from that.

When he attended the opening at Easter weekend this year, he was ''blown away''.

In a statement released this week Highlands Motorsport Park owner Tony Quinn said there would be more events like this on the park's calendar.

''Right from the start it was always proposed that Highlands would be a facility that the entire Cromwell community can use and be proud of.

"The Highlands Triathalon Sprints are just the beginning and we have several other major events planned for the venue outside motor racing.''

Mr Davis said there was already ''massive interest'' in the event.

It will be the second public event to be held at the park after its Easter opening.

On the morning of October 26, triathletes will race over two distances - a 750m or 200m swim around the mini lake created for storage or irrigation water, a 20km or 10km cycle around the race track, followed by a 5km or 2km run.

Duathletes will run 500m, cycle 10km then run another 2km.

Following that, there will be a 40km road cycling circuit race, a teams triathlon, events for children and a road cycling criterium.
