Cold front forecast for weekend

Just so we do not take summer for granted, another cold front is expected to blast through Otago at the weekend.

MetService forecaster Ian Gall said a "significant" southerly change was predicted for Otago late on Saturday.

It would bring showers and cold southerlies to the region, but was not expected to last long, he said.

The MetService could not forecast weather with any certainty more than a week out, he said.

WeatherWatch said numerous highs lining up to cross the country were expected to bring drier, warmer weather for the rest of the month.

The New Zealand summer so far had been a mixture of rain, cold, some warmth and spring-like winds, and was only starting to settle down now in its second half.

After the cold snap, another high was forecast to last until near the end of January, bringing with it lighter winds, hotter weather and less rain.

The incoming highs would likely make the rest of January free of tropical cyclones - such as ex-cyclone Fina, which brought torrential rain and flooding to Nelson and Tasman last month.
