Applications are open for any Otago residents interested in joining a committee dedicated to getting national fire management in Wellington to hear their voices.

Otago residents have until mid-September to join Fire and Emergency New Zealand’s Otago Local Advisory Committee (LAC).

Otago LAC chairwoman Megan McPherson said their job was to bring a "strong and independent community voice to the work that Fenz does".

"In turn, they can better support local and national planning and decisions."

The real point of the committee was to make sure Otago concerns were heard in Wellington, where the national management was.

They were looking for people in Otago who really knew what their community needs were.

She said Otago had a diverse range of needs and risks.

"Otago is a really diverse province, both population-wise and geographically — we’ve got an alpine fault, tussock land, forests, a network of extremely popular tourist highways, and housing intensification all throughout Central — these things bring added risk."

The LAC was started in 2020 and met about four times a year.

Otago was one of the first regions in the country to set up a committee.

Ms McPherson said there were about eight members at present and three vacancies to fill, but more positions were likely to crop up soon as many members were quickly reaching their term limits.

Interested applicants can apply on the Fenz website.
