The Highlanders went up country again yesterday, spreading the good word about the franchise.

With Helicopters Otago laying on the transport, four of the franchise's backs journeyed inland to Macraes, Maniototo and then over a few hills to the Matakanui Valley.

It was the second trip by helicopter by the Highlanders to the inland parts of Otago, after a previous one in late March to South Otago townships.

Ben Smith, Kendrick Lynn, Lima Sopoaga and Shaun Treeby boarded the chopper and dropped in on Macraes-Moonlight School, Maniototo Area School, Paerau School and Omakau School.

As well as greeting the pupils, the players were giving away fan packs, and tickets for tonight's game between the Highlanders and the Lions at Carisbrook.

The Highlanders had wanted to get into the more far-flung areas of the region to get close to all their fans.

Macraes-Moonlight School teacher Glenda Heckler said the trip to the school of 10 pupils was a huge thrill for the children.

All of the pupils got dressed up in their favourite blue and gold colours, and made the most of the free children's packs handed out.

A barbecue was also organised at the school.

Highlanders commercial manager Mike Kerr said, by Helicopters Otago providing the transport, the players had the opportunity to get out of the city and into the remote regions of what was a large district.
