High Country Salmon, near Twizel, is expecting 400,000 visitors this year and so the opening recently of a new 12-cubicle toilet block at the business has been celebrated as a win for the community.

Pictured are (from left) High Country Salmon owner and general manager Peter Logan, Joy Paterson, Debbie Rawlings, builder Dave Rawlings, Mackenzie deputy mayor James Leslie and High Country Salmon cafe manager Tracey Gunn at the facility.

The new $300,000 toilets would ease the pressure on nearby public toilets struggling to keep up with the influx of tourists to the Mackenzie district, High Country Salmon owner Peter Logan said.

"It’s a big event for us, but it’s something that the wider community needs and will benefit from."

Mackenzie Deputy Mayor James Leslie was on hand for a net-cutting ceremony last week a nod to an incident at the salmon farm earlier this year.

"This will be our second net-cutting incident this year," Mr Logan said on Friday.

Police never caught anyone responsible for cutting a net on May 19 on the side of a pond at High Country Salmon, releasing 6000 young salmon into the Ohau hydro canal and Lake Ruataniwha, costing thousands of dollars.
