Alcohol-fuelled scenes of 2009 not forgotten: police

An improvement in the behaviour of holiday revellers could be behind an increase in bookings for hotels around Otematata, but police said they would not be resting on their laurels and promised swift reaction to any disruption at campsites during Labour Weekend.

Senior Sergeant Jason McCoy said although the alcohol-fuelled scenes that disrupted the holiday in 2009 were not repeated last year, extra police would still be on hand during the weekend to ensure youngsters attracted to a traditional campsite at Loch Laird behaved appropriately.

Underage drinking in particular would not be tolerated.

"Some people seem to think it is their god-given right to drink, but unfortunately that impacts on the community."

Otematata Lakes Hotel owner Kerry Mason said he had good relations with the police and had been in regular contact with them during the last 12 months.

He did not wish to comment on the behaviour of campers over the past few years, but said bookings this year were well ahead of last year.
