Wes Hamilton says his Triumph Rocket 3 motorcycle personifies everything he likes in a motorcycle - it's big, shiny, has loads of chrome and "grunt to burn''.

Mr Hamilton's Triumph, which he bought new in 2006, was one of more than 200 motorcycles on display at the Whitestone Motorcycle Touring Club's show at the Oamaru Club at the weekend.

Mr Hamilton (49) has been riding motorcycles since he turned 15 and was legally allowed to ride.
"Actually, a wee bit before that,'' he admitted.

The Oamaru panel-beater has since ridden and owned many motorcycles, but his Triumph was probably his favourite, he said.

"I've had four Harleys and I like my Harleys, they are neat bikes. But I do like my Triumph,'' he said.

Mr Hamilton got some ribbing from some of his friends when he switched from Harleys to the Triumph.

"I have a slogan - Harley-Davidsons are lovely little bikes, good to learn on. That seems to shut them up.

"It's done in jest,'' he quickly added.

Mr Hamilton said he was fortunate his wife Victoria was a keen motorcycle rider. Her blue 750 Honda Shadow was on display.

The pair did a lot of riding at weekends- "just cruising'' - and it was an enjoyable way to spend a Sunday afternoon, he said.

It was a pleasure getting out on the open road, although, being bald, he could not feel the wind in his hair, he quipped.

The club has about 35 members and Mr Hamilton estimated about 85% of the motorcycles on display had come from North Otago.

Mr Hamilton liked keeping his motorcycle in good order and had never ridden on a gravel road _ apart from road works, "and I look at them with contempt'', he said.
