Just a day after being relaunched after about two months' work on the slip at Oamaru Harbour, Marama sank at its moorings.

Yesterday, another attempt was made to refloat it as air was pumped into floats.

The 7m to 8m boat went down on Thursday afternoon after being relaunched on Wednesday.

An initial attempt to refloat it was unsuccessful.

Its Oamaru owner, seen rowing out to it in the photo, did not want to be interviewed by the Otago Daily Times yesterday.

The wooden-hulled boat had been on the slip for work and the owner was on board on Wednesday to ensure any water that entered because the hull had dried out was pumped off.

However, it appeared that after he left sometime on Thursday, the pump failed, although the cause would not be known until the boat was refloated.

Water built up and the boat sank on Thursday afternoon.
