A spike in the number of burglaries reported in Oamaru's North End is a worrying trend that is concerning residents, police say.
Over the past month at least eight properties in the area around Redcastle and Fernbrook Rds and the streets that branch off them have been targeted, with the majority of the alleged burglaries being carried out during the day.
Sergeant Tony Woodbridge, of Oamaru, said reports of residential properties being burgled in Oamaru were ``not common'', but advised residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to police.
"We are having a rather large spike at the moment. We have had residents call up concerned because they are aware of it. People need to make sure their properties are secure and they keep an eye on each other's property. If they see people in their neighbourhood that don't quite fit . . . or there's anything suspicious, call police.''
As a result, police have increased their presence in the area in the form of regular patrols.
When asked if there was any indication that the crimes were linked, Sgt Woodbridge said that was forming part of police investigations.
"We have to keep an open mind. However, it is a large spike in Oamaru compared to what we would normally expect in the Oamaru area (and) there is the fact that the majority are day time burglaries.''
He said the fact several burglaries had been committed during the day suggested properties may be being watched and people's movements noted.
Sgt Woodbridge asked anyone with information that may help police with their enquiries to contact police directly or call Crimestoppers on 0800-555-111.
