Car destroyed by fire

A Subaru car was destroyed by fire on State Highway 1 at Hillgrove, near Palmerston about 2pm yesterday.

The driver, who declined to give his name, said the car started smoking and sparks were coming from the engine.

Police said a battery may have caused the fire.

The highway was closed for 30 minutes while the Palmerston Volunteer Fire Brigade and police attended.
