Chocolate was on the menu for Dora Hobbs' 101st birthday yesterday.

Her favourite cake - chocolate - was the birthday cake at Sandringham House Rest Home.

Lunch was roast chicken followed by her favourite dessert, pavlova, with chocolate on top.

Dressed in pink and wearing a floral corsage and pearls, Mrs Hobbs exclaimed "Lovely" as her many birthday cards were opened and read to her.

With balloons above her chair in the lounge, residents enjoyed a birthday morning tea.

Members of Mrs Hobbs' family were expected for afternoon tea.

Mrs Hobbs, who lived around Waimate for most of her life, moved to Sandringham House in Oamaru about four years ago when Woodham Lodge, Waimate, closed.

She was the third eldest of 11 children, and her mother lived two days short of her 107th birthday.

Married to the late Les Hobbs, she has two children.

Rest-home owner Linda Cant said the only time Mrs Hobbs saw the doctor was for her three-monthly check.
