Closed landfill a problem

Moeraki's landfill may have been closed for several years, but people are still illegally dumping and burning rubbish there.

The Waitaki District Council wants that to stop because of the cost of cleaning the rubbish up and the unsightly mess it is causing in the coastal township.

The rubbish was being left on the landfill site and pushed over the sea cliff face, creating a dangerous and unsightly hazard that was a risk to public health and was damaging the environment, the council's solid waste manager, Gerry O'Neill, said.

The council had tried to stop the illegal dumping using signs and padlocks.

"These measures have been to no avail and illegal dumping is continuing."

Mr O'Neill had outlined the problem in a report to the Waihemo Community Board, which would meet on Monday night. Contractors would have to clean up the landfill, at a cost of $12,000 which would come from the local amenity rate paid by Waihemo ratepayers.
