Oamaru's only movie theatre is on the market after being closed since October 25.

Limelight Cinema patrons were initially told the four-screen cinema was closed for "maintenance", but a spokesman for the owner's family told the Otago Daily Times in November the facility was shut due to the owner's illness.

Spivey Real Estate has listed the business only, including up-to-date equipment and "a proven record over many years", for $450,000 plus GST.

Spivey Real Estate's Tony Spivey said as a local he wanted Oamaru to retain its movie theatre.

"It's been here for as long as I can remember in one format or another and it would be great to see somebody take over the reins and enjoy the benefits - and obviously provide something for the community that locally we all miss right now."

Jen Wall has owned Limelight Cinema since 2012.

Just my option but places like the cinema are finding it tough to stay due to prices and changes brought by internet convenience. I recommend an pre-purchase buyers scheme or looking at online voting for on-demand movies. Probably a combination of the two ideas might help, but really getting to know why people go to cinema these days should be researched if considering to run a cinema. Always my main option is it's sad when local social area is gone but I hope there's room in the future for new innovative social areas for people to gather and experience together. Cheers.
