Costly dogs

Adopting a dog from the Waitaki pound could become much more expensive with the Waitaki District Council proposing a large increase in the fee.

The council's customer services committee will today consider recommending the council increase the dog adoption fee from $40 to $165, but will also offer more for the money.

Regulatory services manager Lichelle Guyan said about 25 dogs from the pound found new homes every year.

Under the present fee, new owners were required to pay the cost of registering the dog, along with vaccination and neutering (unless a working dog).

That put extra cost on the council with the dog control officer having to follow up to ensure that had been done.

The new adoption fee of $165 would cover costs which would have been paid by the new owner in the past.

These included registration, vaccination, neutering and microchipping.
