The Waitaki District Council is considering delaying upgrading some water supplies now the Government has extended the deadline to meet new drinking water standards.
However, it is also proposing to bring forward upgrading of two supplies, Otematata and Hampden-Moeraki.
The schemes it is looking at delaying are Duntroon and Stoneburn (for one year) and Tokarahi, Awamoko, Kauru Hill and Windsor (for two years).
The council's assets committee on Tuesday will consider whether or not to proceed with the changes in the upgrading timetable.
The council had originally planned to complete the upgrades in the 2013-14 financial year.
The change had provided an opportunity to reassess the areas of most benefit for the community and re-prioritise the work.
However, even then the council was still required to upgrade 21 water supplies over seven years - the equivalent of one every four months.
The only supply which had been upgraded to the new standards was Oamaru.
