A colourful new mural is welcoming Waitaki Girls’ High School students for the start of the school year.

The mural, by local artist Wicksey, was designed in collaboration with the school’s wellbeing team to reflect values of resilience, respect and responsibility.

"It’s all about cohesiveness and working together. Those school colours burst into a native tui bird which is flying away and going out into the world — that’s what the story of the mural was about," Matthew "Wicksey" Wicks said.

Former student wellbeing leader Sophie Brown said it was "about igniting our spark and shining, as we are all able to grow and shine at this school".

After completing her final year of high school last year, Ms Brown was happy to leave a lasting legacy.

"If you’re having a bad day and walking through the gates, you are able to feel the energy and the love the school can bring to you. I’m so proud we were able to do that," she said.
