Appropriate fencing can help avoid catastrophes.

That is Sergeant Blair Wilkinson’s message to farmers, after a car hit a cow on State Highway 1, near Oamaru Airport, at 10.55pm on Saturday.

The driver, a 21-year-old Oamaru man, suffered minor injuries.

"He’s tried to take evasive action but was unable to avoid the cattle beast," Sgt Wilkinson, of Oamaru, said.

Farmers and motorists could both learn lessons from the crash, he said.

"Police would just like to remind farmers of the importance of ensuring any fences that border roads are up to scratch, because the consequences of cattle, or any sort of stock, being on the road can be catastrophic," Sgt Wilkinson said.

A police spokeswoman said the cow was put down at the scene.

The crash was still being investigated, Sgt Wilkinson said.
