Crash highlights behaviour

A crash yesterday in which a woman was injured highlights how bad some Oamaru drivers are at stop signs, police say.

''We monitor them on a regular basis, but I've had a number of comments when I've issued a fine to go and do some real police work,'' Senior Constable Carl Pedersen said yesterday, after the crash.

The 38-year-old woman, who was taken to Oamaru Hospital with whiplash injuries, was driving her Mazda east along Wansbeck St when a 79-year-old Oamaru man, in a Nissan 4WD, drove from a stop sign and hit the front of her car, Snr Const Pedersen said.

The Nissan crashed into a fence and the Mazda was shunted into Wansbeck St. A teenage girl in the Mazda was not injured.

The male driver of the Nissan told police he stopped at the stop sign, but failed to see the other car coming down the hill.

Snr Const Pedersen said he could not dispute that, but too many drivers in Oamaru treated stop signs as give ways.

Stop signs were on dangerous intersections and drivers had to bring vehicles to a complete stop.

''The difference between stopping properly or rolling through could be a life, and this could have been the result of the crash [yesterday],'' he said.
