Winifred Gaze, who celebrated her 75th wedding anniversary in July last year, has died in Oamaru.

Mrs Gaze (97), who is survived by her husband Alfred, died at Totara Lodge Rest Home on Sunday.

When the couple marked their wedding anniversary last year, it was believed they were New Zealand's longest married couple still alive, just a year short of what was believed to have been New Zealand's longest marriage at 76 years.

The couple grew up in England, where Mrs Gaze (nee Guildford) was a childhood friend of her future husband's sister.

After a three-year engagement, the couple were married in the Holy Trinity Church, Wealdstone, Middlesex, on July 28, 1934.

The family moved to New Zealand in 1951.

In an interview in 2008, Mrs Gaze said the couple had always worked together, looked after each other and enjoyed their family.
