Kurow will launch its first farmers market today, an event organisers hope will grow from small beginnings.
One of the organisers, Val Wilson, said getting the first day of the market off the ground was "exciting" for both residents and holiday-makers over the summer.
There were six bookings for stalls today, but she was confident that would grow as the market became established. Market spaces would be available for anyone who turned up on the day, provided they complied with farmers market rules.
However, organisers planned to be flexible so the market would expand. There will also be a "kids' corner" where children can join the market.
On sale today will be bacon-ham-pork products, fresh vegetables, organic vegetables, jams, chutneys, spices, gluten-free baking and fresh eggs.
The market will be held between 9am and 1pm in the Kurow town centre every week until April 11, when stallholders will make a decision on whether to continue during the winter.
However, it will not be held next Saturday because of Waimate's annual Strawberry Fare.
