Fire may have been deliberately lit

Police are investigating a fire at the Oamaru racecourse this week which had the potential to destroy the members stand.

The fire, which caused some internal damage, occurred on either Tuesday or Wednesday and had burned out when it was discovered by the caretaker.

A scene examination had been completed and it appeared it might have been deliberately lit, Detective Sergeant Mike Ryder said.

•A 19-year-old Oamaru man was arrested on Wednesday night and charged with dangerous driving, failing to stop for police and driving while disqualified.

The charges arose from a pursuit, which police abandoned, earlier in the week.

He has been remanded on bail to appear in the Oamaru District Court on March 25.
