Firefighters are hoping there will be no strong winds during the weekend as they continue to dampen down two fires in pine plantations on a farm property behind Hampden.
Fire broke out in the two 5ha plantations about 3am on Tuesday and firefighters were still at the scene with tankers yesterday, putting out hot spots.
They were using thermal-imaging equipment to find hot spots, digging them out and then hosing them down.
Waitaki rural fire chief Chris Raine yesterday said there were fears the fire could reignite in strong winds.
It could be some weeks before the fire could be officially declared out.
About 6ha of trees, some up to 28 years old, had been destroyed.
