Five of six signs on State Highway 83 warning motorists of wild animals have been stolen.
The yellow signs, with an image of a deer, were installed between Otematata and Kurow.
Constable Nayland Smith, of Omarama, said the signs had ''disappeared'' in the past month.
The New Zealand Transport Agency had organised the signs, after Const Smith had raised the issue of animals roaming near the highway.
Const Smith said there had been about six incidents recently of motorists hitting animals on the road between Otematata and Kurow, particularly in the Lake Aviemore area. Pigs were most commonly hit, he said.
Const Smith asked anyone with information on the theft of the signs to contact the Omarama Police Station on 03-438-9559 or anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800-555-111.
