Foreshore work halted temporarily

The foreshore protection work at Oamaru Harbour has been temporarily halted so the contractor can do some ``fine tuning'' to make its processes more efficient, the Waitaki District Council says.

Council roading manager Michael Voss said the contractor, Paul Smith Contracting Ltd, told council last week it halted work because there had been ``some difficulties with the sand delivery method'' while filling the geotextile sand-filled mattresses to be installed between Oamaru Creek and Holmes Wharf.

The $770,000 coastal erosion protection work, in front of Oamaru Creek's blue penguin colony, began in April and was scheduled to finish in August.

The stoppage could have an effect on the project's end date, but it was not expected to be more than minor, Mr Voss said.
