Consumer-owned electricity distribution company Network Waitaki, based in Oamaru, is to install the charging stations as part of its plans to help reduce vehicle emissions, at a total cost of about $200,000.
The company has also added an electric vehicle to its fleet.
Network Waitaki chief executive Graham Clark said Oamaru’s charging station, at the Eden St car park, would be the first to be installed, within the next month.
It is hoped the other three will be installed by the end of April.
They will be located near the Plunket rooms in Kurow, near the Hampden Tavern in the township south of Oamaru and in a public car parking area in Omarama behind the Caltex service station.
The sites were chosen based on their accessibility and convenience, Mr Clark said.
Network Waitaki chairwoman Clare Kearney said the installation of the charging stations was an experiment to see how well utilised they would be in the district, with a view to adding more.
Network Waitaki worked closely with the Waitaki District Council on the project, she said.
