Emergency services were called to the intersection of the highway and Russell Rd after a truck and a car collided about 10.45am.
St John spokesman Gerard Campbell said one person had moderate injuries and three people had minor injuries. Two of the injured were taken by ambulance to Oamaru Hospital and the others were treated at the scene.
A police spokesman said the southbound lane of the highway was closed and traffic diverted along T Y Duncan Rd while debris was removed.
The highway reopened just before noon.
