The increasing popularity of Glencoe Domain for holiday-makers and tourists in campervans has prompted a major overhaul by the Department of Conservation, including a new $100,000 toilet block and shelter.

The domain, about 3km inland from Herbert, has undergone a transformation in preparation for this season, due to start at Labour Weekend.

The area has also been landscaped.

North Otago ranger Kevin Pearce said the Department of Conservation camping area, which borders the Herbert Forest, had increased in popularity in recent years.

As a result, the old single toilet has been replaced with three unisex toilets with their own storage tanks, including disabled facilities, and a shelter with a long bench and sink.

Drainage has been put in across the camping areas, trees planted, wooden bollard fencing put up, pathways created and the driveway shingled.

The access road has also been improved to make it easier for those visitors in campervans.

Mr Pearce said camping in the domain was growing, prompting the improvements.

Campers pay only $6 a night per site, and this was proving a drawcard for families.

"I think it will get even more popular now with the extra facilities and attractions the area has," he said.

Those attractions included swimming in and walking the north branch of the Waianakarua River, tracks in the adjacent exotic and native forests, extensive birdlife and its feeling of isolation while still being close to State Highway 1 and Oamaru.

"Oamaru families can come down for the weekend or over the summer holidays, commuting back to work," Mr Pearce said.
