Harbour properties interest

Three potential developers have been identified as accommodation providers at Oamaru’s waterfront.

Waitaki District Council property manager Renee Julius declined to name those who had responded to the council’s call for expressions of interest for two council harbourside properties —  a 7400sq m site in Esplanade Dr and a 6200sq m site in Tyne St — but said the council received in total five expressions of interest and responded to them all last week.

"We’re pleased with how well the proposals have been developed and how Waitaki will benefit from them should they be accepted," Mrs Julius said.

"At this stage, however, we’re unable to release any further information until council has discussed them."

Waitaki Mayor Gary Kircher said two of the three developers were seeking to buy the vacant land from the council outright while the third was seeking to lease the land.

"There’s definitely variety in there, each is a different proposal as to the type of accommodation and there are certainly exciting options there," Mr Kircher said.

Developers were expected to "grow the pie", by attracting visitors to the town and add to the established identity of it, he said.

The council had now asked for detailed plans from all three potential developers.
