Heritage sites in North Otago and South Canterbury have been visited this week by the board of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust and the trust's Maori Heritage Council.

The board and council usually meet in Wellington, but several meetings are also held in regional areas each year to visit historic places and meet promoters of historic heritage.

Meetings in Oamaru had enabled board and council members to meet Historic Places Trust branch committee members, iwi, local councils and trust staff.

It had been a very productive and enjoyable time, board chairman John Acland said.

Initiatives focused on important historic places in North Otago for heritage tourism were reinforced to board members, who also enjoyed visiting the historic precinct and Oamaru heritage buildings during their three-day schedule, Mr Acland said.
