Hopes first 'Oamarican' US car show will crack ton

American car fans have until the end of this month to register for a show in Oamaru, which organisers hope will attract 100 or more vehicles.

Registrations for the Oamarican Car Show in February are already coming in, including one from the United Kingdom.

"Being our first year of hosting the event we have to be realistic about numbers, but our goal is for it to be held annually as a 'not-to-be-missed' event on the American car owners' calendar," event organisers Jayne Jackson and Barry Sinclair said.

Fords, Chevrolets, Cobras, Cadillacs, Dodges and Buicks will rumble through the streets of Oamaru and on Waitaki district roads over four days from February 9 to 12.

"This is the perfect location as it's central and there are excellent touring routes throughout the region for cruising. In addition, there is a large number of American car owners right here in Oamaru," she said.

The show will take the format of a street cruise through Oamaru on the Thursday evening, where the public will get the opportunity to see the cars.

On Friday, the cars will travel in convoy up the Waitaki Valley, stopping for lunch at the Countrytime Resort Hotel. It was possible Thames St would be closed off, with retailers able to stay open for late-night shopping while the cars cruised the street and gave the public the opportunity to take a ride.

On Saturday, the public will get a chance to view the cars up close at the planned Show Shine and Country Fair at the North Otago Showgrounds.

A dinner and prizegiving will be held at the Galleon Restaurant that night.

The event will end with breakfast and departure on Sunday morning.

The Weston Progress League will run some of the events with proceeds going back into the community.

It would be supported by Tourism Waitaki, event development officer Jan Kennedy said. If the target of 100 cars was be reached, there would be significant economic benefit to the district, she said.
