Irrigation company launches $500 tertiary study scholarship

A new scholarship to help North Otago students enter tertiary studies has been launched by the North Otago Irrigation Company.

Its board of directors has approved a $500 scholarship for a local student who intends entering tertiary studies with an emphasis on environmental management.

Applications need to be made by October 1 and the recipient will be announced after the company's annual meeting, usually held in early November.

Chief executive officer Robyn Wells said the company wanted to recognise the value of further education in its industry, which was building a strong emphasis on environment and community responsibility.

It also wanted to provide opportunities to young people who had an interest in building a sustainable future for New Zealand.

The scholarship is open to final-year pupils who attend one of the North Otago high schools or to a student whose family work and live in North Otago.

An application is available through company's website and includes a 500-word essay which asks applicants: "Once you are qualified, what do you hope to contribute to the social and economic development of your chosen industry?".
