The 120-year-old one-way wooden bridge that runs through the seaside village of Kakanui, in North Otago, will close on weekdays from Monday, February 12, at 8am until Friday, March 9, at 6pm to repair rot.

It will be open at weekends, from 6pm on Fridays until 8am on Mondays.

Detours would be in place along Maheno-Kakanui Rd, Fortification Rd and State Highway 1 for weekday traffic as crews undertook  "quite a bit of structural repair work" underneath the bridge, Waitaki District Council roading manager Michael Voss said.

The bridge would remain open to pedestrians throughout. About 1220 vehicles cross the bridge daily. The work will cost $183,000.
