A 21-year-old Kakanui man has been charged with dangerous driving - and police say more charges are possible - after he allegedly drove at speed through a group of people last week.
Yesterday, Sergeant Tony Woodbridge said the charge related to an incident in Stirling St, Kakanui, about 10pm on Wednesday.
The driver of a red Ford Cortina did a 100m burn-outbefore crashing into a ditch on the corner of Magdala St.
Members of the public called police.
It was alleged the male driver then left the scene and later returned driving a Ford Falcon, which he drove at speed through six or seven people standing on the grass verge.
No-one was injured, Sgt Woodbridge said.
The man was arrested on Friday and bailed to appear in the Oamaru District Court on November 26.
Police inquiries were continuing and a scene examination had been completed, he said.
Wearing a seat-belt saved the life of a 67-year-old man who crashed at Enfield on Saturday night, Sgt Woodbridge said.
The man's four-wheel-drive vehicle went off the side of a one-lane bridge on Slaughter Yard Rd about 9pm.
He was taken to Oamaru Hospital for examination.
