A 29-year-old Chinese man has been charged with careless driving causing injury after the collision of two vehicles at Pukeuri on Tuesday afternoon.
At the intersection of State Highways 1 and 82, the man's four-wheel-drive rental vehicle and a northbound Toyota Prado towing a caravan collided.
The South Otago couple travelling in the Toyota towing the caravan, Peter and Esmey Fletcher, were treated at Oamaru Hospital before being transferred to Dunedin Hospital on Wednesday night.
A Dunedin hospital spokeswoman said Mr Fletcher's condition was classed as "for assessment", while Mrs Fletcher had undergone an operation and was progressing well.
None of the five Chinese tourists in the rental 4WD was injured. The driver of the rental vehicle will appear in the Oamaru District Court on Wednesday.
