A forty-year volunteer with the Palmerston and Waihemo A&P Society, farmer Barry Kemp, of Green Valley, has been awarded the Royal Agricultural Society medal.

Mr Kemp was awarded the medal by the Palmerston and Waihemo A&P Society at its annual meeting this week.

It was awarded jointly to Mr Kemp and his late wife, Ruth, both past presidents of the Palmerston society.

Mr Kemp, who was also a long-time competitor in horse and sheep categories, recalled riding to shows at the age of 7 from the pony club's grounds opposite the Palmerston saleyards.

He has been responsible for organising yarding stock for each of the annual Palmerston shows.

Our journalists are your neighbours

We are the South's eyes and ears in crucial council meetings, at court hearings, on the sidelines of sporting events and on the frontline of breaking news.

As our region faces uncharted waters in the wake of a global pandemic, Otago Daily Times continues to bring you local stories that matter.

We employ local journalists and photographers to tell your stories, as other outlets cut local coverage in favour of stories told out of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

You can help us continue to bring you local news you can trust by becoming a supporter.
