Oamaru man to be farewelled at Christchurch service

Former Oamaru man Andrew Manson will be farewelled by family and friends at a service in Christchurch tomorrow.

The body of Mr Manson (28), who disappeared after drinking at a bar in Lyttelton early on July 26, was recovered on Saturday from cliffs near the Windy Rock lookout above Cashin Quay at Lyttelton.

Police said there appeared to be no suspicious circumstances and the matter had been referred to the coroner.

Mr Manson had been working at a call centre in Christchurch.

His parents, John and Lynley, who live in Oamaru, lost their elder son, Paul, in 2003, when he died after a diving accident.

The couple and their Wellington-based daughter, Rachael, helped with the search.

Police and the Manson family have thanked Lyttelton residents and search and rescue squad members for their assistance in the search.

Yesterday, Oamaru Cricket Club member Mark Julius said Mr Manson loved cricket and used to enjoy playing for the club when he was home from studying and staying with his parents.

"The first question he always asked was, `Can I get a game'? It didn't matter what grade it was," Mr Julius said.

He was always very competitive, loved batting and was a popular team member, he said.

The service for Mr Manson will be held in the Harewood Crematorium Chapel at midday.
