Only minor injuries after collision causes van to ignite

A van burst into flames in a paddock north of Omarama after leaving State Highway 8 yesterday.

Emergency services were called to the fiery two-vehicle crash between Lake Ohau Rd and Mcaughtries Rd about 2.35pm.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokeswoman said the van left the highway as a result of the crash and came to rest in a paddock.

It then ignited, sparking a small vegetation fire that scorched a patch of grass.

The blaze was quickly brought under control by firefighters from Omarama and Twizel who arrived at the scene a short time later with tankers and pumps.

Police and St John also attended.

St John spokesman Gerard Campbell said three people were treated for minor injuries at the scene, but did not require hospital treatment.

A police spokeswoman said none of the occupants of either vehicle were trapped.

The highway was closed until about 3.20pm while fire crews cleared debris from the scene.

No further information was available yesterday.
