Oamaru police yesterday gave gift packs, pens and lollipops to motorists in Itchen St, in an effort to encourage safe and responsible driving this holiday period in North Otago.

Sergeant Tony Woodbridge, of Oamaru, (pictured) said police were checking driver’s licences, warrants of fitness, that drivers were wearing seat belts and ensuring no-one was drinking and driving.

The gift packs were given to the Oamaru Police by a visiting Canadian tourist.

Sgt Woodbridge said the woman said some police in Canada gave away gifts to people to encourage safe behaviour and she wanted to emulate that in Oamaru.
