The Waitaki District Council’s $770,000 foreshore protection work at Oamaru Creek has started.

The project, awarded to Paul Smith Contracting Ltd in the summer, is expected to be complete by the end of August.

The installation of 30cm geotextile tube sand mattresses along 240m of Oamaru waterfront in front of the Oamaru Creek penguin colony has been timed to minimise the disruption to the little blue penguins.

The site with its 252 nesting boxes  will be shifted and expanded during the work.
