Kauru Hill's war memorial is to be made over to public ownership.
The Waitaki District Council is to take over the small plot of land, originally part of the closed Kauru Hill School, as a local purpose (war memorial) reserve.
Council property manager Dougall McIntyre said the 367sq m war memorial site was originally part of the Kauru Hill School that was closed in 1995.
At the time, the Ministry of Education agreed to the small bit of land and memorial being transferred to the community.
Although the small block was subdivided off, the rest of the school site was sold in March 1998, but no action was taken to transfer the memorial to the community and it has remained in ministry ownership.
The council intends to rectify the situation now the ministry has declared the war memorial land surplus to requirements.
